Science & Environment

The Dark Data Project continues to support important, data-driven research through collaboration on projects such as Biota in Canada and The Technosignature Research Portal. Research projects are an opportunity for us to encourage innovation upstream of the startup ecosystem, while simultaneously pursuing our goal of a more understandable, data-rich world.

Biota of Canada
Partner Profile

Biota of Canada

Biodiversity and conservation workers have been hampered by a lack of accessible information about the various species that live in Canada. While much of this data exists, there is no one place providing a comprehenmsive overview of Canada's biodiversity and directing researchers to more detailed data sources. Canada and its biodiversity is so vast, and scientific resources so thin, that it remains a challenge to answer the basic question, what lives here?

Technosignature Research Portal
Incubator Profile

Technosignature Research Portal

TRP is a centralized repository of theory, research and discussion relating to the detection of anthropogenic technosignatures and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) -- particularly "serendipitous" technosignatures, such as planetary engineering projects, rather than deliberate attempts to communicate. Searching for technosignatures, as opposed to biosignatures, is advantageous in that technology is essentially biology writ large, and has the potential to be more recognizable and more detectable than organic life. To date, few repositories exist which are representative of the research performed in this area.
